7th Science - Bean theory project

7th Religion - Discussion questions over Matthew 16 & 17 due Thursday (2/27)

1. Jesus was concerned about the teachings of the Pharisees, that if the disciples followed their advice they would get in trouble.  What advice have you followed that got you in trouble?
2. In chapters 16 and 17 we read that Jesus clearly told His disciples that he was going to be tortured, crucified, and killed.  If Jesus said all of this was going to happen, why do you think the disciples were so surprised that Jesus actually died on the cross?
3. On the mount of transfiguration, the disciples caught a glimpse of God's glory and Jesus shone like the sun in bright white clothes.  Sometimes people catch a glimpse of God's glory in a different way.  When have you caught a glimpse of God's glory?

Quarter 3 Memory Verses

Hebrews 11:1
11 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Ephesians 2:8-9
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9
4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. ?5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. ?8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates.

Matthew 11:28-30
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 13:44-46
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

John 6:35

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

John 6:67-69
67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”

1 Peter 3:15
15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect

Isaiah 53:4-5
4 Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
    stricken by him, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

Matthew 18:15-17
15 “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

2/18

7th Science - We revised our bean theories and looked at corrections for science fair reports.

7th Religion - Discussion Questions over Matthew 14 & 15 are due on Thursday:

  1. Jesus often went off by himself to pray.  He found it was important to be alone sometimes.  When have you really enjoyed the chance to be alone?  Why was this time important to you?
  2. Peter was able to walk on the water until he got distracted by the wind and waves around him.  What are the wind and waves around you that distract you and keep you from focusing on God?
  3. Jesus called the Pharisees blind guides, that if blind people lead blind people they both fall into a pit.  Have you ever listened to or followed someone who did not help you, who gave you advice that was not helpful?  What was that like?

8th Science - We continued working through ionic bonds and made graphs using the data from last week's lab. Presentations can happen tomorrow or next Wednesday.

World Religions - We finished the movie The Frisco Kid and prepared for our field trip to the B'nai Amoona synagogue on Friday (2/21).

2/14

7th Science - We finished sharing our theories on why the beans had different spots on them when we were trying to grow them. Next week we will revise our theories based on feedback that we got from classmates about our theories.

8th Science - We looked at ionic and covalent bonds through work with dot diagrams of elements, and completed a lab trying to control the exothermic reaction of calcium chloride.

7th Religion - Yesterday we talked about the importance of prayer, so today we practiced praying during class using the following list as a guide:

Spend some time quietly thinking about how God has spoken to people around you – how have your parents, grandparents, mentors, or other people and how they described time spent with God.

Spend some time quietly thinking about times that God has definitely spoken to you in your life.  When was it?  What was happening in your life at the time?  What did God want to say to you?  How has that impacted your life?

Spend some time thinking about how God may have spoken to you within the last 24 or 48 hours.  When did you hear Him?  What do you think he is saying to you?

Spend some time thinking about how God may have spoken to you through what you have seen lately, what people have said to you lately, or what you have read lately?

Think about some things that will be happening to you in the next few days.  How could God be working through the event you and your family have planned?  What do you think God would want you to say or do during those events?

Are there things that you have read in the Bible that stick out, things that you remember hearing or reading that seem really important?  (maybe something you heard in school, in church, in another book that quoted the Bible, a memory verse you really like, etc.)  How does God speak to you through those Words?

Spend some time in prayer right now and ask God to help you see ways that He is speaking to you and what He would want you to be doing.

Spend some time reading the Bible and praying about how God may want you to see ways that He is speaking to you and what He would want you to be doing.

Write down some things that stand out from spending this time with God so that you remember them.  If you do this in the future, you can compare the times that you spend with God and see how God is helping you grow in your faith and your walk with Him.

World Religions - We continued learning about Judaism while watching the Frisco Kid.

Thursday, February 13, 2014

2/13

7th Science - We began sharing our theories about why the beans have the spots that they do.

7th Religion - We read Mark chapter 1 and discussed prayer during solitary moments.  Students may discuss these questions with parents for a bonus.

1. Why do you think Jesus went to 'solitary' places to pray?
2. What do you think Jesus prayed about?
3. When can you have solitary time with God? What would you pray?

8th Science - We did a lab with sodium bicarbonate and calcium chloride trying to control the amount of energy released in this exothermic reaction.  We also talked about the difference between ionic and covalent bonds.

2/6

7th Science - Students turned in their science fair reports, as well as a paper that gave a theory why some of the lima beans grew unusual spots.

8th Science - Periodic table test #5a (elements 1-45).  Students were also encouraged to spend time preparing for a presentation of their 8th grade project for the science and learning fair later this month.

7th Science - Discussion questions were due today, and we took the quiz over Matthew 13.
New memory is not due until 12/17 with the shortened schedule next week:
John 6:35 & John 6:67-69

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

2/4

7th Science - Bean growing reflection, and talked about why some unusual spots and growths were on our beans.  Students should create a theory for why these spots have formed (due Thursday - 2/6):
dirty hands - Clay
2 different parents - Lukas
bad plant - Jason
Not enough air - James
mold - Josh
not enough water - Brennan
chemicals in the napkin - Julia
Outer layer of the bean - Zach
bean mutation - Sarah
something in the water - Brooke
from the bag - Anna
wrong temperature - Lilly

8th Science - We reviewed some information about the different groups on the periodic table.

7th Religion - Discussion questions over Matthew 13 due Thursday (2/6)

  1. What parable has made the biggest impact on your life (it may be one from Matthew 13, but it might be another one like the Good Samaritan, The Prodigal Son, or any other parable Jesus taught)? Why?
  2. What things would be worth “selling everything you own” like the person did who bought the treasure in the field?  What are the really important things that are like a very fine pearl?
  3. Jesus was honored by many people, but not the people in His hometown that he grew up with.  It might be like a brother or sister winning a big award.  How would it be hard or easy for you to have your brother or sister or some one close to you honored instead of you?

World Religions - Watching The Frisco Kid to learn more about Judaism
